BEHAVIOR SUPPORT COUNSELOR

 

 

About the Position

Under the supervision of the Licensed Clinical Director: Special Programs and the Lead Mental Health Clinician of the Wellness/Rehab program, the Behavior Support Counselor is responsible for providing support services in the community to children and youth by assisting in skill building developed during therapy sessions with a Licensed Practitioner of the Healing Arts (LPHA). This is a wonderful opportunity to impart positive changes in the lives of children and youth in the region.

Pajaro Valley Prevention and Student Assistance (PVPSA) is a nonprofit organization committed to improving the lives of children, youth, and families in Pajaro Valley. Founded in 1991, PVPSA provides a range of services aimed at promoting student success and community well-being. Its mission includes providing health education, mental health support, and substance use services, while advocating for public policies that protect community health. PVPSA works closely with local schools, including the Pajaro Valley Unified School District, the County Office of Education (COE), local government, state agencies, and partnering nonprofits to deliver its programs. These collaborations help create a supportive environment that addresses the diverse needs of students and their families.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Aid in skill building to develop and maintain functional living skills, including social skills, emotional regulation skills, daily living activities, and build up support resources

  • Provide education and skill training to assist clients in achieving their goals in various life domains as determined by the treatment plan developed by the overseeing LPHA

  • Utilize evidence-based interventions in sessions with clients based on the therapy modality being utilized by the LPHA

  • Identify areas of strength and skill deficits to be communicated back to the LPHA for further treatment planning

  • Communicate with the overseeing LPHA to note the interventions that appear to be successful with each client, and those that are not reported as helpful by the client

  • Document activities through routine use of an electronic health records system(s);

  • Provide case management support as needed

  • Attend clinical and administrative supervision and trainings as required

 

Employment Standards

Knowledge of:

  • Basic social rehabilitation, socialization and practical life management skills

  • Evidence-based therapeutic interventions is preferred

 

Ability to:

  • Communicate clearly and effectively in both oral and the written word

  • Work with peers, children, adolescents, and families

  • Assess clients’ behavioral and emotional problems and collaborate with LPHA to develop treatment recommendations

  • Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties

  • Timely communication and completion of documentation

  • Effective and flexible time management

 

Training and Experience Education:

Requires an Associate’s (AA) degree in health-related field and 6 years of experience in a health/mental health related field; or a Bachelor’s degree in a health-related field and 4 years of experience in a health/mental health related field. Up to two years of graduate professional experience may be substituted for the experience requirement on a year-for-year basis.

 

Additional Requirements:

Valid California driver's license and clearance for agency vehicle insurance coverage. Negative fingerprint screening and tuberculosis skin test/x-ray.

 

Salary Range:

$26.46 - $29.17 per hour depending on experience.
